Two New Captain Three Leg Releases

"Coming Up Short" is the world's shortest full-length; 40 cover songs in less than 4 minutes.I was listening to The Dehumanizers and it made me think of all the atypical micro-songs from bands who normally played normal length songs. I thought it would be cool to collect them all in one place, but decided to just record our own versions of those songs instead. The bands we covered considered these to be proper songs, so we consider 40 of them to be a proper full-length. It's an exercise in futility.

Also released is our split with GREEN TERROR from California. Nate from BLACK MARKET FETUS handled all of the vocal duties on this split and gave these songs an entirely different sound. The music was all written and recorded over the span of a couple of hours and has more of a crusty HC sound than usual. There's a couple of Sore Throat covers thrown in the mix, too. GREEN TERROR have been at it for a couple of years now and they get better with each release. Recently Ben from GORGONIZED DORKS has taken over behind the kit, so this is their last release with the old drummer. Intense, spastic grindcore with ridiculous samples and a decent sense of humor.

Dismembered Fetus Demo and Rarities Collection

This stuff needed to be collected, plain and simple. For the sake of the music, yes, but also to pay tribute to Joshua "Ace" Stough's contribution to extreme music. I've been a fan of Dismembered Fetus and a friend of Josh's since 1995 and I haven't heard half of these recordings until recently. It's criminal how underrated Dismembered Fetus were as a band and how difficult it was for me to track down their earliest material. I considered myself to be one of the people in the fold (well, maybe just on the fringe), but it alluded me for nearly 20 years. Even in the Internet age, precious little information has turned up about them and only low resolution scans of Foetusgrubber's beautiful artwork could be found. There wasn't much to work with when compiling this collection, but with help from a friend and hours of plundering through fanzines untouched for almost two decades - here is the bulk of their work. The music is as visceral today as it was in the 90s and finally hearing the first two demos gave me a whole new appreciation of their evolution as a band. Literally all of it, though, is absolutely crushing. This hatred they captured on tape sounds genuine, too, and nobody since has been able to duplicate this sound. This is truly angry music, menacing and ugly. Fuck, I miss the 90s.

This release is dedicated to Joshua "Ace" Stough. Though you're gone in form, the memories and your music will live on forever. RIP, 1975-2008.

These two volumes compile the following releases:

"Dumpster Days" Demo (1992)

MORT:074 RUPTURE - "Last Call" Free Download

This Arthouse show was the first and only gig they played after my trip to Australia, recorded months after my return to American soil and months before Gus' death. Had they played while I was there, it's likely this mess is what I would have witnessed. A "mess" is the only way I can describe this, really. This has been floating around the Internet for years now on file sharing sites, and I've listened to it heaps of times before asking to release it. Before reading Zombo and Stumblefuck's notes, I had no idea that the *thwock* sound that occurs throughout the recording was the sound of Gus bashing the microphone against his face. Even with a face full of blood, he managed to keep it together most of the time. It may not have been what the Melbourne grind syndicate was looking for in a Rupture performance, but for fan of going on 20 years, even at their worst, it's satisfying.

A few of these songs appeared on their split 7" w/ Opposition Party, but here it is in its entirety with the audio cleaned up as well as possible.

"By our final gig we were pretty burnt out, the band was a train wreck, we were all jobless alcoholics and rehearsals were basically fist fights. It was going nowhere. Gus was off the rails, but then again we all were really at that time. We played drunk & sloppy. I was playing through some shitty little practice amp with a banana shoved down my jeans. During a song I took it out and peeled it and threw it at some girls in the crowd, but they ducked & it hit the bar chick in the face. She was furious. She hated me, our band, everything to do with Rupture. Mullschlucka were a very short-lived Geelong thrash band doing Dayglo Abortion covers. The Kill had Neil on vocals. I don't think Corruption even played, no idea who they were. Neil bloodied himself up on stage, so not to be outdone, when Gus got on stage he spent more time smashing his face with the microphone than actually singing. The gig was a total fucking mess. But hey, afterwards I had a few Geelong crew slap me on the back laughing, so maybe at least a few folk found it entertaining. In hindsight this gig accurately reflected where the band was at the time - in the process of total meltdown. RIP Gus." (Stumblefuck, 2013)

MORT:075 WUZOR - "WUMUTHAFUCKINGZOR" Free Download

Wuzor recorded a decent chunk of music during their short existence, and it was consistently good. Dave and I were trading records at the time, so I acquired all of their records as they were released. The last package I got from him had a CDR of his new band, Funeral Shock, and a letter saying Wuzor had disbanded. We lost contact after that, but those records were in heavy rotation at my house for a couple of years. I forgot all about Wuzor until I listened to all of my CDs last year and found a disc with some unreleased tracks on it. Listening to it inspired me to get in contact with Dave to see about releasing it, but I only knew him as "Dave". Even today, I still don't know his last name. Googling combinations of Dave + Wuzor + Wolfman Records + Funeral Shock turned up nothing. A month prior to this I refused a friend request from Dave on Facebook because I didn't recognize the name. Eventually, he sent me a message and everything fell into place. It's funny how these things come together sometimes.

Wuzor's music is many things at once and reflects what I can only assume were their influences at the time. It's as sludgy as Sloth (but less stupid), as epic as Neurosis (without the pretense), as heavy as Floor (minus the pop tendencies), and rocks as hard as the Melvins (without the comedy hairstyles). Because all of this stuff was recorded at the same studio, it plays like the full-length album they never recorded.

MORT:063 ARTORTURED - "Dimensions of Suffering" free download

15 tracks of desert-baked, hyper-blasting noisegrind from Santa Fe, New Mexico featuring members of Ear Bleeding Disorder, Sistema Nervioso, Dismembered Fetus and Noisear. The band was short lived and only recorded an 8 track demo, a split 7” with Crisis Rebirth and was featured on the Bad People Records Comp “Hymns For The Hearing Impaired” in the mid nineties. They performed only a few shows in their short existence with bands like Assück, Logical Nonsense, MITB, Neurosis, Spazz, The Fanatics, EBD, His Hero is Gone, Agents of Satan, Dead Bodies Everywhere and Dead and Gone. This was their only full length, recorded at Free Reeling Studios in Denver, CO in 1998, and never saw the light of day until now.

Thanks to Dorian for unleashing this monster after all this time and for allowing me the honors. Dedicated to Joshua "ACE" Stough - RIP

THE MIGHTY ACCELERATÖR - "Back From the Dead" free download

The second Mighty Acceleratör EP is finally mixed and available for your listening pleasure. Recorded in August of 2011 while we were still playing as a 5 piece, these 4 songs capture the band in it's final days of the twin guitar line-up. The music has been described as "the sound of a first-wave punk band bashing away at early heavy metal", "like Kiss covering the Dead Boys". 4 songs of beer-swilling, hard-driving, stoner-free rock 'n' roll with a punchy 16 track analog recording with the appropriate amount of dirt and fuzz mixed in.

Don't take my word for it, though. The price is right, so listen for yourself and make up your own mind. It's absolutely free from any of the links below, so you have nothing to lose.

MORT:061 DUMB CHURCH - "Learning Curve" download

In 1996, after having recorded on a friend's 4 track a couple of times, I decided to buy one of my own. It's arrival brought a period of experimentation and a collection of songs recorded with the sole purpose of learning how the machine worked and where to set levels, etc. These recordings were all done in my bedroom with me playing all of the instruments. Lacking a drummer (and proper drums, really), a make-shift drum set consisting of a Remo practice pad, empty cookie tin and a pair of spoons filled my percussion needs until I was able to borrow a Boss DR-5 drum machine for a few days. The guitars were recorded directly without any mics. This period of exploration lasted two weeks before I lost interest. The end result is 91 tracks of bedroom bored-core.

MORT:060 "Slipped Through the Cracks" compilation

This thing has been an albatross hanging around my neck since 1998. It started with a couple of bands that sent their tracks, but didn’t make the deadline, for “Attacked by Bees…” Instead of just saying, “Sorry, you’re out of luck”, I decided to put together another compilation. But, one of the complaints I heard often about my previous tape compilations was that people didn’t like the mixture of noise and music. Taking that into consideration and spreading myself thinner than I should have, I took on the task of doing two separate compilations at once; one all experimental/noise, the other grindcore/hardcore. I’ve never been terribly good at multitasking, though, and having just finished “Attacked by Bees…”, I really wasn’t feeling up to the task. Complicating things further, I was at a loss as to which compilation to put some of the bands as they really defied classification. Some of the other bands that sent tracks I just didn’t like and didn’t want to put them on either. Things were getting busier for me with Mortville. Between working my day job and filling orders in my free time; I lacked motivation to see either project to completion. Instead, these tapes have been sitting in a box for 14 years gathering dust, exclusive material people sent me for release that’s gone unheard all this time. Some of these songs could have very easily have gone on “Where’s Your Beard?”, my third compilation tape, but these tapes were all but forgotten when I started compiling it.

Some of the bands sent graphics for the booklet, but most didn’t. It’s safe to assume that all of the contact information on the graphics are outdated by now, so I’ve decided not to include any of them. Most of these bands/projects don’t exist today, a few I think may have only existed to record for these compilations. One of the tapes wasn't labeled at all and I couldn't figure out who it was, so I left them off. I got used to listening to these songs in alphabetical order, so that’s how I’m presenting them. I’m putting the music out there now to clean the slate, so enjoy it for what it is. Consider it unfinished business, an accidental time capsule.

DRATSAB - "Discography 1995-1996"

It occurred to me while compiling the E.B.D. collection below that nobody ever talks about DRATSAB, Kevin from E.B.D.’s earlier hardcore band. They’ve always been a favorite of mine, but I think they’re largely unknown. Had I not met Kevin right after they broke up, I probably still wouldn’t know about them today. Kevin’s distinct vocals and buzzsaw guitar sound are largely responsible for my liking this band, but the bass playing and drumming are solid, too. Their music straddled the fence between crust and American hardcore, their lyrics personal and thought provoking.

During their existence they released a full 7”, split 7”s with ALCOHOLOCAUST and REFORM CONTROL and appeared on the “No Royalties” LP compilation. All 12 songs are collected here on this download.

The bass player, Tony, made a myspace page for the band as sort of a tribute. According to their page he still has copies of their records for sale. I also learned by browsing their page that Leo, their drummer, is now dead. I have no clue what happened, though.

E.B.D. collection re-upped

12 songs from an unreleased 4 track rehearsal demo have been added to the E.B.D. collection below. The cover art has been changed to reflect the new track listing and the download link has been switched out with a new one. Thanks to Chris "Pito" Petersen of Zombie Hate Brigade for now only bringing these recordings to my attention, but for sending me a copy of them, too. If you've already grabbed this collection, please do so again. The added songs are worth the effort.

SLAVESTATE - 1992-1993

SLAVESTATE, from New York, were of my favorite bands from that mess of mostly forgettable powerviolence bands from the 90s. They’re a great example of how lack of fidelity can work to a band’s favor. Had this stuff been recorded in a proper studio, a lot of the power of these recordings would be missing. During their short existence they released a demo, split 7”s with RUPTURE and LACK OF INTEREST and some compilation tracks before changing their name to PNEUMATIC VALUES, then again to AVULSION. The demo was pressed on vinyl by Sludge Records in France, the last song of which appeared on the “Son of Bllleeeeaaauuurrrrgghhh!” 7” compilation. 26 tracks in less than 20 minutes are all that exists from this great band. A lot of shittier bands from that era have had their material released on a discography CD/LP. Someone needs to extend the same gesture to them.

NECROPHILIACS - "The Collected Works"

So, I guess I'm posting other people's releases here now...

Necrophiliacs are one of the great "ham-sandwich-in-the-mouth" noisecore bands from Germany. I've always considered them to be a noisecore band because of the scene they came from, but their songs had a lot of structured parts in addition to the blasts of noise. Those vocals are something else, though, soooooo fucking stupid... There are cover versions of Patareni, No Comment, Sick of it All, Infest and Fear of God mixed in this 42 song collection. According to noisewiki.com
they shared members with W.B.I. at one point. After they split up some of them went on to form Flachenbrand. With the exception of the ultra-rare split 7" with W.B.I., all of these rips came from my vinyl / CDs. I've never once seen a copy of the W.B.I. split available for sale and all of the rips I've found of it online sound like complete dogshit. I've included it here anyway to keep this collection more or less complete. There might have been some demos or compilation tracks I don't know about, so I can't say for sure how complete this is. This collects the following releases:
V/A – RUDI RAT VOL. 6 2CD (Ecocentric Records / 1999)
V/A – OBRADE: A Tribute to Patareni LP (Falšanja Kol'ko'š Records / 1996)
“Hardcore Psychos” 7” (Perverted Taste / 1995)
Split 7” w/ INCISIVE (Perverted Taste / 1995)
Split 7” w/ MEAT SHITS (Regurgitated Semen Records / 1994)
“Primitive and Unclutivated” 12” (Rodel Records / 1993)
Split 7” w/ LEUCEMIE (Rodel Records / 1992)
Split 7” w/ W.B.I. (Schnauf Records / 1991)

CAPTAIN THREE LEG / COP BAR - "C3LVSCB" Free download on Grindcore Karaoke

I had posted a preview of this earlier, but have taken it down since it's available in it's finished version now. The C3L side of this came from a recently discovered 4 track recording tracked in Denver around 2000 while visiting my good friend Ace. After discovering something was fucked with the recording and not being able to fix it, we just gave up. The guitar track recorded as a faint buzzing noise leaving the drum track as the only salvageable part of the recording. Enough of the guitar bled through on the drums to allow me to re-learn the parts and re-record them using Reaper. Guitar, bass and vocal overdubs were recorded November 13th + 14th of 2011.

Cop Bar are one of very few grindcore bands from Iowa. Their singer, Samuel Locke Ward (famous in his own right, though nobody reading this will be familiar with his output), even came from the same home town as me. Their music sounds like an even angrier version of Dropdead and Anal Cunt.

There will be a limited 3"CDR release of this in a few weeks, but in the meantime you should download the entire thing from Grindcore Karaoke since Randall was cool enough to host it for us.

MORT:029 Deche-Charge / Permanent Death - split 7" 2006 free download

I'm uploading this tonight because I've had this scrap of paper sitting on my desk since 2006 detailing the pressing info (how many copies of which color vinyl) and I wanted to finally throw it away.

The Deche-Charge / Permanent Death - split 7" was the last vinyl release I did on Mortville. I typed up a long explanation detailing my reasoning and included it with the record, but I'm sure most people didn't bother reading it. It seems I always feel the need to explain myself when I stop doing something (see "Small Doses"). The numbers in my essay have changed some since I wrote it (CDs are even cheaper to manufacture now), but most of what I wrote is still relevant today. I'll post the original essay below the download link.

Tony from P.D. contacted me about doing this split. He arranged it and I jumped at the opportunity to work with Deche-Charge again. I don't think I had heard Permanent Death before he mailed me and sent a tape, and I wasn't quite sure what I was listening to. It sounded like harshnoise, but occasionally you could hear drums and hints of guitar. They managed to sound like Merzbow, but created that noise with a typical band arrangement. I'm not the biggest fan of harshnoise. It's not something I've released a lot of, anyway. I wasn't completely sold at that point, but when he sent me another tape with the material for the split I came around. In an odd turn of events, without knowing who was releasing this 7" when they arranged the split, the D-C stuff was recorded IN 1998 for a split tape with Captain Three Leg that never happened. It's strange I ended up releasing it after all, though 10 years later. This is some of my favorite D-C material, I'm glad they asked me to release it.

The D-C side of the test pressing was botched the first time and had to be re-cut. The second set of test pressings they sent had only the D-C side on it (B side was blank), so full finished test pressing copies don't exist.

I ordered 300 copies of the 7", told the plant to make as many different colors as they could without cleaning the machine between colors. As a result, I got a wide variety of colors, some as few as five copies. The pressing breakdown of the 313 copies delivered is as follows...

116 x grey
80 x toothpaste blue/green
28 x dark hunter green
26 x blue
24 x pea soup green
21 x clear
7 x red
6 x burgundy
5 x teal

(tosses that piece of paper in the trash)

The labels were all blank and required me to hand stamp all of them. The ink took several days to dry, so the 313 copies were strung out all over the kitchen counter on every available flat surface until both sides were finished.

Tony from Permanent Death died sometime after this 7" was released, but I never got the full story as to what happened. It's my understanding it was by his own hand, but I don't know any details. I've known lots of people in this scene that have died way too early, it always shakes me up a bit. We only wrote each other a few times, but it's still sad. RIP Tony Schepkens.

The record sold quickly and was received fairly well. I still get people asking for copies all the time and it usually sells for $20+ on eBay when I see it. Just download it instead and save your money for other things...

Here is the essay included in the vinyl copies...

THIS IS THE LAST EVER MORTVILLE VINYL RELEASE, AND HERE'S WHY...

I've said it a hundred times before, "People release vinyl because they love it, not because it's cost effective". This has to be why people release 7"s, because I just can't see any other reason for it. When doing a price comparison between releasing 1000 7"s and 1000 CDs, CDs always come out on top. Here's the breakdown based on a couple of examples I've found...

(NOTE: I don't necessarily endorse or recommend either of these places, nor do I discourage people from using them. These are just examples I've found on the internet, places I've worked with and have had no problems dealing with. I chose them because they are inexpensive and make good examples. The record you found this essay in was pressed at www.billsmithcustomrecords.com, they're a more expensive, but I've found you get what you pay for.)

1000 x 7" records from United Record Pressing

Mastering and Plating (from www.aardvarkmastering.com - the cheapest place) = $225.00

1000 x 7" 33rpm records with small hole = $440.00

Test Pressings = $22.00

1000 Sets of Labels = $80.00

Postage for Tests and Return of Masters = $28.00

Record Jackets = $200 (this is a very moderate estimate, I've paid as much as $300)

1000 Poly Bags (from www.bagsunlimited.com, before shipping) =$44.00

TOTAL before shipping = $1039.00

Price per 7" = $1.04 each

1000 x CDs from www.wonderdrugrecords.com

1000 x CDs with 4 panel booklet, color front, b/w inside and color tray card = $1090

2 color on disc printing = included in price

Packaged in Jewel Case = included in price

Shrink wrap = included in price

Films / Shipping = $150.00

TOTAL = $1240.00

Price per CD = $1.24

So, which format do you go with?

The difference in price between releasing a CD as opposed to a 7".... About $0.20 a CD. Not a lot, is it? Then why is there such a divide in the price labels sell them for?

Profit from the sale of 1 x CD = $7.00 (give or take)

Even in the underground, factory replicated CD packaged in a jewel case sell for around $10.00 each, some as high as $12.00 and some as low as $8.00, so I'm using $10.00 as mid-ground baseline. Let's say the label gives the bands involved 20% of the pressing, which leaves them with 800 CDs to sell at $1.55 each. CDs might cost $1.50 to send via First Class Mail - add another $1.50 to $1.55 = $3.05 total cost for each CD (shipping goes down for each CD if you ship more than one at a time, but I'm going for the highest estimate here). This leaves almost $7.00 leftover from the sale of each CD for the label. Not bad, eh?

Profit from the sale of 1 x 7" record = $0.21(roughly)

Most labels still charge $3.00 for their finished 7"s, some as high as $4.00, but most are still holding on to $3.00 as their postage paid price. I think if you charged $5.00 for a 7” you’d scare a lot of potential buyers away. Again, the label gives 20% of the pressing to the bands involved leaving 800 copies @ $1.29 each. 7" records cost about the same to ship a single copy as CDs do, so let's estimate at $1.50 again for First Class Mail - add another $1.50 to $1.29 = $2.79 total cost for each 7" record. This leaves a whole $0.21 left over from the sale of each 7" record for the label, a far cry from the $7.00 leftover from the sale of a CD.

I realize of course that I haven't even touched on advertising, promotional copies, etc, but I figured it would be about the same cost for each format. I've been doing this since 1997 and I've never spent a dime on advertising, so I didn't figure that into the cost because you really don't need it.

So why are CDs sold for so much?

I don’t know. I've never figured it out. I sell my factory replicated CDs (same packaging as the other labels, the “Big Guys”, who charge more, so my cost is the same) for $5.00 each. I've toyed with the idea of selling them for less, but after a certain point, people don't take you seriously as a label and think that there must be something wrong with the CD for it to be sold so cheaply. I always thought making $2.00 from the sale of a CD to be pretty good. I have a day job, this isn't my primary source of income (I'm guessing this is the same with most other people who run labels in the underground), and so I can't see charging more than that for a CD. If more labels followed this example, maybe the price of CDs would drop a little across the board. The prices of all electronics have dropped over the years, DVDs have dropped in price after their introduction in the market, but CDs prices are as high as ever. It's the same in the underground, I wouldn't expect it to change. Why spend $10.00 for a CD when you can find the same ting in another distro for $6.00? Sounds good, but it's not going to happen. I've had labels refuse to trade their CDs against mine when they found out how little I was planning on selling them for because they didn't want to be undersold. Still other labels wouldn't trade my CDs straight across for theirs because of how little I sold them for, said they weren't worth as much as theirs and have tried asking for more things to balance out the trade in their favor.

You've decided to press a 7" anyway...

So if you run a label and decide to press a 7", you've obviously done one because you like the format, not because it was cost effective and you thought you would make money from it. Now what are you going to do with your pile of 1000 records? Most labels that do things on the same scale as Mortville trade their records against other people's releases and sell them through their distro. Let's face it, it's a lot easier to sell 10 copies of 100 different records than it is to sell 1000 copies of one. The likelihood of you finding 1000 different people as customers is pretty small, so trading is how I, and most other smaller labels, get rid of their releases. If you're lucky enough to find labels to trade their vinyl releases against yours, you can sell their records for the same price, plus a $1.00 markup to cover your expense of sending your records to them. A $4.00 price tag for someone else's record is still pretty good, most people will pay it, but you're still only making $0.21 or so from each record sod.

If you're trading your 7"s against other labels CD releases, it's an entirely different story. Even though CDs cost around the same price to manufacture, the market price of a CD dictates that your 7" is worth less than their CD is, this is always the case and there aren't any exceptions. Most labels will want to trade 3 copies of your 7" against each of their CD. Some cooler labels will trade 2 of your 7"s for their CDs, and some will try and fuck you over to go as high as 4 for 1 CD. Don't ever trade 4 of your 7"s for 1 CD!!! These people care nothing about the underground, they're there to make a buck from you.

So you've decided to trade 3 of your 7"s against another label's CD because you really like the artist and you think people will buy them from you. You've just spent 3 times the amount as the original label did to carry that title, not including shipping. Shipping is another issue. When you trade 30 of your 7"s against 10 of another label's CDs you're spending at least 3 times as much on shipping as they are. If you're trading with a label from another country, 90% of the time they're going to send you CDs without jewel cases so THEY can save on shipping. You're sending them finished product they can turn right around and sell, meanwhile you have to go and buy jewel cases for the 10 CDs they sent you before you can sell them - on top of paying 3 times as much for shipping you're going to have to pay another $5.00 ($0.50 a jewel case) to sell their CDs. I've never figured out how this is fair, but its standard practice for most underground labels.

What does all of this mean?

Nothing, really... I typed this out as an explanation as to why I'm not releasing 7"s anymore (several people have asked, I figured this was a good place to explain myself). I’m not trying to deter people from releasing vinyl. People should know what they're getting into, know what shit other labels will try to pull on them. My advice is if you release a 7", trade them against other 7"s, not CDs. If you decide to trade them against CDs and someone tries to get 4 of your 7”s for 1 of their CDs, keep in mind the cost and reconsider trading with them.

If you decide to release a CD, consider passing along some of the savings to the customers. Chances are you're releasing something because you feel passionate about the music (or in my case, noise) and you want other people to hear something you enjoy, not to make money.

Mortville is not dead, but as far as I'm concerned, vinyl is. I'll continue to buy other people's records because I love the format and the music, but I'm not releasing it anymore. I've reached a point where I've decided enough is enough.

Billy Crystal Meth downloads

BCM was an instrumental doom/sludge band I did with my brother and a close friend between the years of 2005 and 2009. We recorded and released 4 CDs, two of which are still available for purchase. I decided to create a Bandcamp page for the project and make all of our releases available for free download. Please consider purchasing a CD if you like what you hear. Like life, they're cheap.
