Dismembered Fetus Demo and Rarities Collection

This stuff needed to be collected, plain and simple. For the sake of the music, yes, but also to pay tribute to Joshua "Ace" Stough's contribution to extreme music. I've been a fan of Dismembered Fetus and a friend of Josh's since 1995 and I haven't heard half of these recordings until recently. It's criminal how underrated Dismembered Fetus were as a band and how difficult it was for me to track down their earliest material. I considered myself to be one of the people in the fold (well, maybe just on the fringe), but it alluded me for nearly 20 years. Even in the Internet age, precious little information has turned up about them and only low resolution scans of Foetusgrubber's beautiful artwork could be found. There wasn't much to work with when compiling this collection, but with help from a friend and hours of plundering through fanzines untouched for almost two decades - here is the bulk of their work. The music is as visceral today as it was in the 90s and finally hearing the first two demos gave me a whole new appreciation of their evolution as a band. Literally all of it, though, is absolutely crushing. This hatred they captured on tape sounds genuine, too, and nobody since has been able to duplicate this sound. This is truly angry music, menacing and ugly. Fuck, I miss the 90s.

This release is dedicated to Joshua "Ace" Stough. Though you're gone in form, the memories and your music will live on forever. RIP, 1975-2008.

MORT:074 RUPTURE - "Last Call" Free Download

This Arthouse show was the first and only gig they played after my trip to Australia, recorded months after my return to American soil and months before Gus' death. Had they played while I was there, it's likely this mess is what I would have witnessed. A "mess" is the only way I can describe this, really. This has been floating around the Internet for years now on file sharing sites, and I've listened to it heaps of times before asking to release it. Before reading Zombo and Stumblefuck's notes, I had no idea that the *thwock* sound that occurs throughout the recording was the sound of Gus bashing the microphone against his face. Even with a face full of blood, he managed to keep it together most of the time. It may not have been what the Melbourne grind syndicate was looking for in a Rupture performance, but for fan of going on 20 years, even at their worst, it's satisfying.

A few of these songs appeared on their split 7" w/ Opposition Party, but here it is in its entirety with the audio cleaned up as well as possible.

"By our final gig we were pretty burnt out, the band was a train wreck, we were all jobless alcoholics and rehearsals were basically fist fights. It was going nowhere. Gus was off the rails, but then again we all were really at that time. We played drunk & sloppy. I was playing through some shitty little practice amp with a banana shoved down my jeans. During a song I took it out and peeled it and threw it at some girls in the crowd, but they ducked & it hit the bar chick in the face. She was furious. She hated me, our band, everything to do with Rupture. Mullschlucka were a very short-lived Geelong thrash band doing Dayglo Abortion covers. The Kill had Neil on vocals. I don't think Corruption even played, no idea who they were. Neil bloodied himself up on stage, so not to be outdone, when Gus got on stage he spent more time smashing his face with the microphone than actually singing. The gig was a total fucking mess. But hey, afterwards I had a few Geelong crew slap me on the back laughing, so maybe at least a few folk found it entertaining. In hindsight this gig accurately reflected where the band was at the time - in the process of total meltdown. RIP Gus." (Stumblefuck, 2013)

MORT:075 WUZOR - "WUMUTHAFUCKINGZOR" Free Download

Wuzor recorded a decent chunk of music during their short existence, and it was consistently good. Dave and I were trading records at the time, so I acquired all of their records as they were released. The last package I got from him had a CDR of his new band, Funeral Shock, and a letter saying Wuzor had disbanded. We lost contact after that, but those records were in heavy rotation at my house for a couple of years. I forgot all about Wuzor until I listened to all of my CDs last year and found a disc with some unreleased tracks on it. Listening to it inspired me to get in contact with Dave to see about releasing it, but I only knew him as "Dave". Even today, I still don't know his last name. Googling combinations of Dave + Wuzor + Wolfman Records + Funeral Shock turned up nothing. A month prior to this I refused a friend request from Dave on Facebook because I didn't recognize the name. Eventually, he sent me a message and everything fell into place. It's funny how these things come together sometimes.

Wuzor's music is many things at once and reflects what I can only assume were their influences at the time. It's as sludgy as Sloth (but less stupid), as epic as Neurosis (without the pretense), as heavy as Floor (minus the pop tendencies), and rocks as hard as the Melvins (without the comedy hairstyles). Because all of this stuff was recorded at the same studio, it plays like the full-length album they never recorded.

Midget Fetish + Kusari Gama Kill Releases Online

I've been wanting to release a Midget Fetish discography CD for years, but I lost contact with their singer for well over a decade and was never able to make it happen. Recently we've re-connected and I convinced him to send me his master tapes to make transfers from. Unfortunately, they didn't sound any better than the demos I bought 16 years ago, so we've done the best we could with them. Pretend it's the 90s again and you're listening to a fuzzy tape and you'll be okay.

EDIT: A lot of work has been done to clean up the audio since I originally posted this a few days ago. Even if you've already downloaded it, I urge you to do so again. It sounds heaps better now.

Aussies seem to hate being compared to Blood Duster, but so often that comparison works. Midget Fetish comes off like a mixture of Blood Duster and Impetigo, but heaps more fun. These demos were on heavy rotation at my house for years and they're just as much fun today. There's a whole generation of grinders today who've never heard of them, though. Here's your chance to rectify that. Chances are this wont be tight, fast or clean enough for them to get into, but those people have never been my audience.

Danish-noise duo KUSARI GAMA KILL have recorded an EP of experimental sounds specifically for Mortville Noise with sounds spelling out a tragic tale of space exploration gone wrong. While this may be a departure from what people expect from KGK, it’s every bit as harsh as their previous sonic attacks. No beats, very few vocals, no "core" - just dark and creepy noise with plenty of tension. I've listened to this thing a bunch already and it's quickly becoming one of my favorite releases. Don't let my lack of writing skills and inability to accurately describe this kind of stuff keep you from checking it out. Download it for free, crank it up nice and loud and lose yourself in the noise.

MORT:061 DUMB CHURCH - "Learning Curve" download

In 1996, after having recorded on a friend's 4 track a couple of times, I decided to buy one of my own. It's arrival brought a period of experimentation and a collection of songs recorded with the sole purpose of learning how the machine worked and where to set levels, etc. These recordings were all done in my bedroom with me playing all of the instruments. Lacking a drummer (and proper drums, really), a make-shift drum set consisting of a Remo practice pad, empty cookie tin and a pair of spoons filled my percussion needs until I was able to borrow a Boss DR-5 drum machine for a few days. The guitars were recorded directly without any mics. This period of exploration lasted two weeks before I lost interest. The end result is 91 tracks of bedroom bored-core.

Captain Three Leg – “Adding to the Shitpile” 2011

In the summer of 1998, Captain Three Leg was just Brian and I. We found we could write and record songs easier and more quickly if it was just the two of us. I set up the 4 track in Brian’s bedroom of his parent’s house and we recorded songs as we wrote them. Every time we played, we had new songs recorded. Brian started doing dual overlapping vocal overdubs while recording this stuff, channeling Obituary (I guess?), and then stopped doing them right after.

Shortly after recording the bulk of this stuff, Jake started playing drums and we did probably the worst organized tour any band has ever done. Upon returning home, Cole came into the fold and our sound changed drastically and we went in more of a metal direction. The bulk of these recordings got lost in the shuffle because they didn’t sound like us anymore. Some of the songs were supposed to be released as a split tape with Blood Suckers from Belgium, but it never materialized. A few of the songs were re-recorded and released on “The Birth of the Creatures to Conquer” years later. 53 trax on this collection, most of which have never been released until now.

Captain Three Leg – “Rated ARRRR: Boombox Days Vol.2” 2011

Primarily, we did our recording on a boombox, but for some reason in the winter of 1995 we decided to record a set of our songs at Studio 16 Productions in Ottumwa. This was the only time C3L paid for studio time in our existence. We picked out our best songs, worked them out a little better than we did our others, recorded and mixed them in a single day. During the recording session, Chris Hunter (the engineer) tried hard to cover his face and not let us see him laughing at us, but we all saw it and none of us cared. This music was funny, there’s no denying it, but this was undoubtedly his first exposure to music this extreme. We recorded on 30+ year old 2” reel tape, same tape he used over and over again, then mixed down to a used cassette tape we brought in. We didn’t even care enough to bring in a fresh tape, figured what we had would be good enough. You didn’t think about things like that in those days.

The 19 songs we recorded that day were split up, mixed with other boombox and 4 track recordings and released on the “44 Song Demo” and our split 7” with South Africa’s Groinchurn. Some of the songs were included on an installment of the “Eating Broken Glass” compilation series, but we never received copies of it, so I can’t say for sure which volume.

In 2004, almost 9 years after I stopped dubbing copies of the “44 Song Demo”, I decided to go through the original source tapes and compile all of the boombox recordings for one release. We used the same tape to record on repeatedly; the newest recording went right over the previous, so there wasn’t much to work with. The remaining takes were drenched in tape hiss. I did what I could to clean up the sound, reduce hiss and normalize the levels, but there wasn’t much I could do. The end result, “Boombox Days: 1995-1996”, did sound a lot better and more consistent than the “44 Song Demo”, but omitted the studio songs that were mixed in with the boombox recordings on the original tape. This studio recording has been unavailable since 1995, and have never been released in it’s entirety until now.

While looking through a box of junk cassettes in November of 2006, I found what makes up tracks #20-90 of this release. I had no idea these recordings even existed until then. Tracks #20-58 are “proper” recordings of those songs and are comparable to the boombox recordings we used on our first release. These versions were never used because studio and 4 track versions exist of most of them. Sprinkled among these versions are a few tracks exclusive to this collection, including “Thank God it’s Funktified”, one of our oldest songs from our first line-up that didn’t make the cut because it didn’t have any noise parts. Tracks #59-90 were recorded during rehearsal leading up to the 4 track recording we did at John Ritz’s house sometime in 1996. At this point our bass player, John Prosser, was missing a lot of rehearsals because he couldn’t drag himself out of bed, so he doesn’t appear on tracks #79-90, leaving us sounding even shittier than usual.

Finally, the last 8 tracks on this recording were unearthed in March of 2011 while scanning through a 4 track source tape looking for something else entirely. Recorded sometime in 1997 and quickly forgotten about, these 8 songs were done while our original drummer, Tom Gillespie, was visiting on return from his stint in the Navy. These songs were probably written and recorded on the spot with very little, if any, rehearsing. The 4 track session for these songs was our last time recording with Tom, and also my very first time manning the faders of my new Fostex XR-7 Multitracker machine, marking the end of the boombox era for Captain Three leg.
