The Imminent Release of "Incident at Ape Canyon" CD

The CDs arrived from the plant this past weekend and they both look and sound great! It's nice to see this thing come to fruition after more than a year of hard work and endless delays. It's well worth the wait, I think. I'm thrilled to share a CD with 8 of my favorite bands and to have had the chance to work with some of the coolest / nicest people ever.

Recorded in August of 2011 while we were still playing as a 5 piece, these 4 songs capture the band in it's final days of the twin guitar line-up. MORT:061 DUMB CHURCH - "Learning Curve" download

In 1996, after having recorded on a friend's 4 track a couple of times, I decided to buy one of my own. It's arrival brought a period of experimentation and a collection of songs recorded with the sole purpose of learning how the machine worked and where to set levels, etc. These recordings were all done in my bedroom with me playing all of the instruments. Lacking a drummer (and proper drums, really), a make-shift drum set consisting of a Remo practice pad, empty cookie tin and a pair of spoons filled my percussion needs until I was able to borrow a Boss DR-5 drum machine for a few days. The guitars were recorded directly without any mics. This period of exploration lasted two weeks before I lost interest. The end result is 91 tracks of bedroom bored-core.

CAPTAIN THREE LEG - "Return to the Space Hole" Preview

I've been putting in a lot of hours recently trying to wrap up the next Captain Three Leg release. It's nearly finished now, a 13 song concept album called "Return to the Space Hole" recorded in September of 2010 and August of 2011. Another Piece of My Childhood is Gone Forever

Taking the long way back to work just now, I've learned that Studio 16 Productions has been torn down. Not a trace of it remains, just a big empty hole where it used to sit. The building has been sitting vacant for years, but it's still depressing. Studio 16 Productions was the first real studio I recorded in and it's where I took bass lessons as a teenager. It's owner and proprietor, Chris Hunter, was an complete professional through and through. My friends and I recorded some of the goofiest, noisiest music he's ever heard, I'm sure, but he treated us with complete professionalism. Once, when we recorded the first C3L demo there, I caught him covering his face during a take so we wouldn't see him laughing at us. When the song was over, it was business as usual and nobody brought it up. It was as if it never happened. As a kid, I dreamed of writing and recording my own music, Studio 16 was the only place to do it around here. He had this great, giant mixing board and recorded on the same 2" tape probably since it was built in the 70s. The studio was everything I imagined it to be, both in its set-up (vocal booths, green room and a light-up "In Session" sign) and atmosphere. The place was totally legit. At some point in the late 90s he sold all of his gear off for a small hard drive based digital studio and moved into the basement of a building downtown. I went there once to transfer Sockeye's master tapes to DAT for the "Barf on a Globe" CD and it just wasn't the same. Chris said he preferred it this way and there was no looking back, but it saddened me then as it saddens me today to see the old location gone forever. I doubt I'll step foot in a "real" studio again, but there's a heavy feeling you get recording in a proper studio like that. It goes against everything D.I.Y. I believe in, but it's a cool experience most kids today will never experience. I prefer doing my own recordings, but I'm happy I had a chance to experience the other side of things when I did. I had three such experiences there and I'll cherish those memories forever.

EAR BLEEDING DISORDER: Its Causes and Cure v.2

I had already been exchanging letters, trading tapes and talking on the phone with Joshua “Ace” Stough for a couple of years at that point, but 1997 was the year my friend Brian (drummer of C3L) and I first made the 12 hour drive to Denver to meet Josh. Josh had just moved back in with his father and seeing how he’d not met either of us before then, he wasn’t sure if it would be okay for us to stay at his father’s house. Instead, we ended up sleeping at EAR BLEEDING DISORDER’s rehearsal space in an old school building in the middle of Five Points, a ghetto in Denver sometimes referred to as “Harlem of the West”. Not only was I not crazy about leaving my car parked on the street overnight, the building had no air conditioning or even windows that opened. There were no showers or working plumbing. It was the middle of July and the smell in that room reached epic heights, but we spent most of our daytime hours driving around doing things, so the heat was tolerable at night. Strong, lasting friendships were formed that summer, so it was worth all the inconvenience.

EAR BLEEDING DISORDER was a band made up of members of REFORM CONTROL, DRATSAB and DISMEMBERED FETUS. I don’t remember how Haroldo and Josh met each other, but they came from two fairly different music scenes: Josh from the death metal/noisecore scene and Haroldo from the hardcore/punk scene. Kevin and Haroldo knew each other from the hardcore scene, even releasing a split 7” with each others bands. Somehow E.B.D. came to be and we happened to be there in the middle of it. We saw them rehearse at least a couple of times, caught one of only a few shows they played during their short existence and even recorded a C3L session with all of the members of E.B.D. and released it as a split 7” with UNHOLY GRAVE. Another C3L session was recorded and released as a split tape with DUECE during that trip with everyone in E.B.D. but Haroldo present. It was a fun week and I made several trips back out there to see Josh and Kevin, some with Brian, some on my own.

EAR BLEEDING DISORDER only recorded in the studio one time, a session that yielded their split 7” with LAUGHING DOG, 17 tracks for the “Chords of Chaos” CD compilation and 6 short blasts of noise for the “Attacked by Bees…” cassette compilation I released before starting up Mortville. Strangely, all of their tracks from their split 7” with the exception of “Magnumb” also appear on the “Chords of Chaos” CD. Some of the songs had different titles on their two releases even though they were the exact same recording. The live tracks on this collection were sourced from a second generation VHS tape, some of which don’t appear on any of their releases making it impossible to attach song titles to them. This 46 track collection contains every scrap of audio I had in my possession.

Just as I don’t remember how the members of E.B.D. met each other, I don’t remember the circumstances surrounding their breakup. Josh reformed his old band YEAST INFECTION a couple of years later, Haroldo took over the drummer position in CATHETER and Kevin did a tour with C3L in the summer of 1999 and has been laying low since then. I haven’t heard from their singer, Brian, since E.B.D. broke up, no clue what he’s doing now.

Thanks to Chris Petersen for bringing the demo recording to my attention and expanding this collection from 46 tracks to 58.

I’ve been pretty busy uploading old out of print CAPTAIN THREE LEG releases to the Bandcamp site recently. With the exception of “Boombox Days: 1995-1996” CDR and the “Live Paroxis ‘96” demo, everything we’ve released is available for free download now. The “Live Paroxis ‘96” tape is being expanded for a “deluxe” reissue with bonus trax galore including a soundboard recording of the show that wasn’t brought to my attention until several years after its release. Captain Three Leg – “Adding to the Shitpile” 2011

In the summer of 1998, Captain Three Leg was just Brian and I. We found we could write and record songs easier and more quickly if it was just the two of us. I set up the 4 track in Brian’s bedroom of his parent’s house and we recorded songs as we wrote them. Every time we played, we had new songs recorded. Brian started doing dual overlapping vocal overdubs while recording this stuff, channeling Obituary (I guess?), and then stopped doing them right after.

Shortly after recording the bulk of this stuff, Jake started playing drums and we did probably the worst organized tour any band has ever done. Upon returning home, Cole came into the fold and our sound changed drastically and we went in more of a metal direction. The bulk of these recordings got lost in the shuffle because they didn’t sound like us anymore. Some of the songs were supposed to be released as a split tape with Blood Suckers from Belgium, but it never materialized. A few of the songs were re-recorded and released on “The Birth of the Creatures to Conquer” years later. 53 trax on this collection, most of which have never been released until now.

Captain Three Leg – “Rated ARRRR: Boombox Days Vol.2” 2011

Primarily, we did our recording on a boombox, but for some reason in the winter of 1995 we decided to record a set of our songs at Studio 16 Productions in Ottumwa. This was the only time C3L paid for studio time in our existence. We picked out our best songs, worked them out a little better than we did our others, recorded and mixed them in a single day. During the recording session, Chris Hunter (the engineer) tried hard to cover his face and not let us see him laughing at us, but we all saw it and none of us cared. This music was funny, there’s no denying it, but this was undoubtedly his first exposure to music this extreme. We recorded on 30+ year old 2” reel tape, same tape he used over and over again, then mixed down to a used cassette tape we brought in. We didn’t even care enough to bring in a fresh tape, figured what we had would be good enough. You didn’t think about things like that in those days.

The 19 songs we recorded that day were split up, mixed with other boombox and 4 track recordings and released on the “44 Song Demo” and our split 7” with South Africa’s Groinchurn. Some of the songs were included on an installment of the “Eating Broken Glass” compilation series, but we never received copies of it, so I can’t say for sure which volume.

In 2004, almost 9 years after I stopped dubbing copies of the “44 Song Demo”, I decided to go through the original source tapes and compile all of the boombox recordings for one release. We used the same tape to record on repeatedly; the newest recording went right over the previous, so there wasn’t much to work with. The remaining takes were drenched in tape hiss. I did what I could to clean up the sound, reduce hiss and normalize the levels, but there wasn’t much I could do. The end result, “Boombox Days: 1995-1996”, did sound a lot better and more consistent than the “44 Song Demo”, but omitted the studio songs that were mixed in with the boombox recordings on the original tape. This studio recording has been unavailable since 1995, and have never been released in it’s entirety until now.

While looking through a box of junk cassettes in November of 2006, I found what makes up tracks #20-90 of this release. I had no idea these recordings even existed until then. Tracks #20-58 are “proper” recordings of those songs and are comparable to the boombox recordings we used on our first release. These versions were never used because studio and 4 track versions exist of most of them. Sprinkled among these versions are a few tracks exclusive to this collection, including “Thank God it’s Funktified”, one of our oldest songs from our first line-up that didn’t make the cut because it didn’t have any noise parts. Tracks #59-90 were recorded during rehearsal leading up to the 4 track recording we did at John Ritz’s house sometime in 1996. At this point our bass player, John Prosser, was missing a lot of rehearsals because he couldn’t drag himself out of bed, so he doesn’t appear on tracks #79-90, leaving us sounding even shittier than usual.

Finally, the last 8 tracks on this recording were unearthed in March of 2011 while scanning through a 4 track source tape looking for something else entirely. Recorded sometime in 1997 and quickly forgotten about, these 8 songs were done while our original drummer, Tom Gillespie, was visiting on return from his stint in the Navy. These songs were probably written and recorded on the spot with very little, if any, rehearsing. The 4 track session for these songs was our last time recording with Tom, and also my very first time manning the faders of my new Fostex XR-7 Multitracker machine, marking the end of the boombox era for Captain Three leg.

Captain Three Leg - "Monkey and the Blue Jay" EP 2011

Okay, so I'm not doing Mortville anymore, but that's not going to stop me from recording music and making it available to those that want it. I'm just going to go the "free download" route for the most part. This is my first post-Mortville release..

"Monkey and the Blue Jay" is a 3 song online-only EP. The download includes cover art, so you can burn your own CD if you choose to. Bandcamp has the option of downloading as wav files, so the sound quality would be just as high as if you got the CD from me.

Stylistically, this is yet another departure for Captain Three Leg. Jake (our sometimes drummer) really doesn't care much for noise/grindcore, so he started coming at us wanting to play guitar instead of drums. These three songs are firmly planted in rock/funk/blues territory and were all written by him. Jake is primarily a drummer, but he doesn't let his beginner status keep him from tearing up the fretboard. He's always been an act-first-think-later sort of guy, and his lack of shame very much works to his advantage.

MORT:008/009 Captain Three Leg - "Reunion / The Last C3L Tape" 2000 + 2001

2000 and 2001 was a weird period for us, but one that yielded a lot of great songs and some of our most creative writing. When we started recording “The Last C3L Tape”, Brian didn’t even have a working drum kit. Songs like “Phanto” and “Baby Funeral” were recorded using the pre-set drums on the Concertmate keyboard with floor tom and cymbals for effect. Our friend Cole came into the mix and played guitar on the earliest songs and inspired Brian to get hit drum set fleshed out again. Soon enough we were in business.

“The Last C3L Tape” was indeed supposed to be our last tape, but only because we planned on making the digital jump to CDR for our next release. We kept on recording after we had all of the songs for “The Last C3L Tape” and soon had a whole second disc of material. Even though the cover art was formatted for cassette tape, we decided to release both of these discs together as one set.

“Reunion” (a joke title, because we didn’t break up) is clearly the better of the two discs and has some of our best songs ever on it. By this time we had gotten the formula down and were getting great results. We spent long days sitting around writing music, listening to it, and then layering overdubs on for texture. This is “kitchen sink” music. Lots of strange “instruments” made their way on to these recordings including: oven timer, jaw harp, a potato chip bag, Wurlitzer organ, trumpet, banjo, etc. I can’t remember a time I had more fun creating music.

There were 60 copies made of this set total. The covers for “Reunion” were printed out on my inkjet, then cut out and carefully glued over top of the cover for “The Last C3L Tape”. I was surprised to find that 9 years later the glue has held up and the two pieces have remained together. This was probably the worst selling C3L release. The people that liked it were very vocal about it, but it was largely ignored when it was released. Hopefully it will gain more notoriety in the digital world.
