MORT:060 "Slipped Through the Cracks" compilation

This thing has been an albatross hanging around my neck since 1998. It started with a couple of bands that sent their tracks, but didn’t make the deadline, for “Attacked by Bees…” Instead of just saying, “Sorry, you’re out of luck”, I decided to put together another compilation. But, one of the complaints I heard often about my previous tape compilations was that people didn’t like the mixture of noise and music. Taking that into consideration and spreading myself thinner than I should have, I took on the task of doing two separate compilations at once; one all experimental/noise, the other grindcore/hardcore. I’ve never been terribly good at multitasking, though, and having just finished “Attacked by Bees…”, I really wasn’t feeling up to the task. Complicating things further, I was at a loss as to which compilation to put some of the bands as they really defied classification. Some of the other bands that sent tracks I just didn’t like and didn’t want to put them on either. Things were getting busier for me with Mortville. Between working my day job and filling orders in my free time; I lacked motivation to see either project to completion. Instead, these tapes have been sitting in a box for 14 years gathering dust, exclusive material people sent me for release that’s gone unheard all this time. Some of these songs could have very easily have gone on “Where’s Your Beard?”, my third compilation tape, but these tapes were all but forgotten when I started compiling it.

Some of the bands sent graphics for the booklet, but most didn’t. It’s safe to assume that all of the contact information on the graphics are outdated by now, so I’ve decided not to include any of them. Most of these bands/projects don’t exist today, a few I think may have only existed to record for these compilations. One of the tapes wasn't labeled at all and I couldn't figure out who it was, so I left them off. I got used to listening to these songs in alphabetical order, so that’s how I’m presenting them. I’m putting the music out there now to clean the slate, so enjoy it for what it is. Consider it unfinished business, an accidental time capsule.

I understand why you didn't include the artwork, but man, Andy, your tape comps are what I consider to be all-time classics in cassette culture. Those little booklets were amazing. I wish you knew how excited I am to listen to this. Comps are an art all to their own, and you were a master craftsman. Thanks for sharing this now.

Thanks for the comment, Zeno. You've told me several times before what you've said above. Those booklets were a pain to make, but they looked great. I tried to capture that same feeling and look from those old comp tapes of mine when I did the booklet for "Small Doses". Not sure if you saw that one or not.

I'm glad you're excited to hear this stuff, but it doesn't work very well as a finished product. I don't have the benefit of being able to listen to this without regret and feeling like I let a lot of people down. I'll never know how it plays to everyone else. There are a few great tracks on this, though, and it was therapeutic to make this stuff available after all these years. I hope you like it.
